Don't let Twitter Weigh you down

I have been researching on twitter and how is it used for Marketing recently.

I am in the midst of planning a one day twitter course and i will announce the details soon.

One important aspect of social media perhaps is the legal implications of our actions on social networking sites like facebook and twitter.

Through out my research, I found that we need to be careful on the following areas:

Libel
If you say something untrue in a public forum about another individual or company, you could be held liable. Since your tweets have the potential to reach millions, an aggressive claim for damages could be extensive.

Sharing confidential information
This happens whenever an employee tweet or share about sensitive or legally protected information about the company. Sharing of trade secrets or sensitive info about a company that is leaked by a tweet could have severe implications. Ensure you understand the sensitivity of your tweet or post before you post your message.

Use in Litigation
The statutes surrounding social media and the messagig therein are still applicable, and in some cases, this new form of online communication could be deemed as inadmissable in a litigation setting.

Make sure you understand your responsibilities as a business owner or employee even on twitter. Seek out reliable legal advice on how you can make the most of your tweeting without straying into the fringe areas. As much as possible, exercise some self censorship when you want to comment on your boss, competitors and company.
