Faith is the constant expectation of good. My top 10 wishes for 2012

Faith is the constant expectation of good. My top 10 wishes for 2012

1) As cliché as it sounds, I wish for more love and lesser hatred in this world.

2) I wish for more courage to step out of my comfort zone and to do miraculously things that I’ve never imagined.

3) I wish to see more Power to the People than to the affluent and powerful minority. I hope to see more active citizenry and political involvement in Singapore.

4) I wish to see people spreading more good on Social Media instead of rampant negativity.

5) I wish to hear young people saying ‘we need change’ rather than ‘we need answers’.

6) I wish to see more of NOOSE, LULU & Pornsak Sukhumvit. Singaporeans just need to laugh at ourselves (& others) much much more.

7) I wish to travel every other month.

8) I wish to be healthy; Powerplates and volleyball.

9) I wish to find more financial freedom.

10) I wish to have more faith and constant expectation of good.

I am supposed to blog about 3 reasons why I want to attend this NuffNang Awards.

1) Spread the Great news of NuffNang

As an academia and marketing lecturer educating students about the media & marketing landscape in Singapore, I want to know and be updated with the latest happenings from Nuffnang. As a lecturer in charge of IMC and Internet Marketing, I will be able to help spread the developments of NUFFNANG to marketing students and future marketers to be. Rumor has it that NuffNang is closing. I want to debunk this myth by attending this award.

2) Blog about my Experience

As a blogger, i would want to get connected with Nuffnang further. I do know about NUFFNANG but somehow the idea of NUFFNANG is still airy fairy for me. I want to blog about the awards and to help bring the discipline of blogging and knowhow to the next level.

3) My first and only overseas Blogger event

I have attended a few local blogger events but have not attended any overseas event. One main reason why i should be picked is that it will be my first oversea's blogger event ever.

Not So Sala Thalay Resort

Choose a good resort if you are heading to Krabi 5/5

If not for Sala Thalay Resort, my trip to Krabi would not have been memorable and worthwhile. Krabi is basically a laid back city with minimal shopping and entertainment. Even the number of massage places pales in comparison with Bangkok and Phuket. The food, in my opinion, was not as delicious as Bangkok's. So if you are keen to go Krabi, be prepared to spend one or two days island hopping, and the rest lazing in your resort.

I booked a one day tour for a Four island Snorkeling trip. It costs 700 Baht per person. The trip was alright. Expect alittle bit of sun tanning, snorkeling and walking on beaches through out the journey. The guide was also hilarious and entertaining. A Packet Lunch, drinks and fruits are also provided.

The next day, my plan was to go for a rafting expedition. I paid 1,100 baht for it. Due to unforeseen circumstances, my rafting trip was cancelled. ( Wana make a guess, what happened?)

Cheap Seafood Opp Sala Thalay 3/5

I would say the highlight of my Krabi stay was at Sala Thalay. The resort was really heavenly and tranquil. I can spend the whole day, lazing by the pool, suntanning, daydreaming, ipading, chitchatting with strangers and watch the day pass by.

For those who are interested and thinking of heading to Krabi, I say, check out this website.

From now on, I will use this blog to talk about my life, thoughts and interesting events.

They say pictures say a thousand words and are more effective in blogs. So i am posting a few of my favourite photos or moments this year.

The Power behind the psychological aspect of Social Media Marketing

The focus of tonight's lecture at Aventis School of Management was on the Psychology of Social Media.

There were a few interesting points raised and certainly insights gained as we went deeper to explore the issues. So what are social media users looking for when they indulge themselves on a social media lifestyle? What are some universal psychological traits of humans which marketers must consider when launching any social media campaign. The fundamental answer to this is akin to all our innate needs we have in this world. There are  7 As of social media marketing which we need to understand as a social media marketer.

The need to be Acknowledged
We are on social media for various reasons. When we first sign up for social media accounts, the need to be acknowledged is high especially when we do not have many friends/ users to begin with. The hand is raised up and they simply want you to notice them. Acknowledge their existence and you will find they'll start to adore you.

The need to be Acclaimed
We all want to be praised, applauded and get recognition for what we do. Likewise in the realm of social media, users are looking for opportunities to get recognition and praises through the work we do or simply by who we are.  give praise to your influencers if they have done well spreading good news about your brand.

The need to be A part
This is a no brainer. People connect on social media communities to get connected. The need to form a community is always evident on social media as we spend many hours online. We are never alone on Social media.

The need to gain Attention
Most people desire some form of attention. For example when someone follows you on twitter, you've gain attention. The attention could also come from a  blogpost when they write something on your blog. As a marketer, conversation is critical in the social media zone. The ability to hold 'capsule conversation' is of critical importance. If you see a conversation on twitter, join the conversation and perhaps point the conversation to any blog feeds or links. Pay attention to some folks who are trying to get your attention.
Remember 'Conversations rule'!

The need to be Approved of
People love to be approved of, esp when they put themselves into a world they are unfamiliar of. Most people who embark on social media usage are looking for approval esp when they are new to it. A simple thank you to these people will go a long way. Most marketing on social media starts with an emotional context. When someone approves of somebody, that person is more likely to resonate with that someone. People who feel approved of, are opened more emotionally to you.

To be Appreciated
Everybody likes to be appreciated. Who doesn't? Many people on twitter/facebook are great at giving appreciation. The easiest way to gain trust is when they feel that they are appreciated. As a social media brand person, give appreciation occasionally to social media users who blog about you, talks about you or even @mention you on their tweets. Openly let them know you appreciate them for what they do online. Be real. And it doesn't cost you much.

To feel Assured
People want to know they are going the right direction. People in social media need to know they are doing the right thing, being with the right person and taking the right action. You need to assure them that they are heading the right direction. When you consistently hold conversation and showing them that they are a part of who they are, they will give you their loyalty.

Knowing the 7As will certainly enhance our work in social media marketing. The power behind the psychological aspect of marketing is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Know these principles and try to weave them into your social media strategy. Engagement level will be at an all time high.

Surrealism , OTP & Hedges Park

Yesterday was perhaps one of the happiest moments in my life. There are indeed many phases in life. From young, we were being exposed to the concept of materialism, consumerism, the world of branding and how branded products can make a difference in our lives.

We started owning things, from branded sport shoes, watches to apparels.

As we grow older, the first aspirational item to own is a car. At least for me. so far i have changed two cars. My first car was the very humble Hyundai Getz and my second is my current car, Subaru Forester.

Owning this property was a dream come true. I dreamt of staying in a resort like environment in the east.
After much divine and angelic intervention, i finally signed the OTP and all documents needed yesterday.

It was surreal.

I wanted to slap myself, and tell myself it is happening.

And yes, i will be moving over my new house in 2014. I hope it will TOP earlier.
For those who had prayed and helped me through the process, my heartfelt thanks.

My mantra - impossible is nothing lives long.

A Creative Campaign Project

I had the honor to work with Joanne Peh for a subject which I am teaching currently. I am glad that everything went smooth and that the students were so enthusiastic and excited about her coming to school. In fact, temasek students were all tweeting about Joanne Peh  and how pretty she was when she was seen walking around in some parts of the campus. I want to thank Winnie Tay for linking me up with her and arranging the initial meet up. Joanne Peh is really a very candid and honest person. Her replies given were really to the point and beneficial to the students. I am sure students felt her sincerity and passion towards this profession and she is indeed a good role model to the younger generation. Keep up the good work and continue to inspire the young.

And by the way, She really look gorgeous up close.

Big appetite for buffets despite price rise

PRICES of buffet spreads in Singapore might be heading north - but foodies are still ready to splurge for variety.
Buffet-goers are forking out anything from $15.80 to $64 each for spreads that range from porridge with side dishes to oysters and rotisserie fare.
When The Straits Times checked with 20 popular buffet joints here, it found that 13 had raised prices by $1 to $9 per diner over the past six months.
They cited rising costs - for food ingredients, electricity and labour - as reasons for the price hikes.
Even so, 11 of these 13 establishments actually saw a rise in patronage.
At Quality Hotel, the Taiwan porridge buffet welcomes 15 per cent more customers now than it did last year. About 400 people flock to the generous spread at the cafe over the weekends.
'Every weekend, we have a waiting list of at least 20 people a day. They put their names down and then mingle in the lobby,' said food and beverage manager Dennis Muthu, 37. 'We've even had to open the lounge to diners.'
The hotel, located on Balestier Road, now charges $15.80 for its dinner buffet spread, up from $14.80 in January this year and $13.50 last year. Laksa has been added to the spread.
Other outlets, even the pricier ones, are telling a similar tale.
Tarafuku Japanese Buffet, at 313@Somerset in Orchard, now serves 570 diners on the weekends, up from 220 when it opened in September last year. These days, it charges $27.80 for dinner; last year, dinner prices from Monday to Thursday were $2 cheaper.
Sunday buffet lunch at Italian restaurant Basilico now attracts 20 per cent more diners than it did a year ago.
A check with the restaurant last Friday found it fully booked for yesterday, with a waiting list of 30. The buffet is priced at $64, against $55 last year and $49 in 2009.
On Jan 1, Carousel at Royal Plaza on Scotts started charging $62 for its weekday dinner buffet, up from $58 last year and $52 in 2009. The restaurant, which also started offering fresh oysters instead of frozen and a wider range of seafood, is now welcoming an average of 720 customers on the weekends, up from 600 last year.
Regular buffet-goer Clara Sim, 29, said she did not mind a slight price hike.
'I just have to eat more,' said the teacher, half in jest. She hits the buffet trail at least once a month.
'I skip lunch and go to the buffet restaurant early. It's like two meals for the price of one.'
Said Ms Nikole Ow, 22, a student who dines at buffets once a month: 'Nowadays, even food courts charge quite a lot. If you can find a buffet for under $20, it's actually better value for money.'
She said ordering Indian food and a fruit juice at Food Republic in 313@Somerset cost her about $10.
'I might as well pay more and enjoy a wider variety of food that is usually better quality as well,' she noted.
Experts say most might find the trend counterintuitive, expecting patrons to be turned off by the price hikes. But the increase in numbers actually makes lots of sense.
'Prices at eateries all over Singapore are going up, so people are willing to pay a bit more to get a lot more. They see a buffet as value for money,' said marketing and retail lecturer Andrew Lee at Singapore Polytechnic's business school.
The higher buffet prices, he said, have not discouraged people as they are used to such increases by now.
Others point to a recovering economy.

'Consumers have raised their price threshold. They now want it all - variety, quality and quantity,' said Mr Dennis Toh, 34, a marketing lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic's business school.
Noting that buffet spreads are also widening in choice, he said: 'Singaporeans love to eat, and food is the first thing they will start to indulge in again.'

Foodie Jerry Fernandez, 62, said the improved economy had prompted him to visit buffets twice a week now. During the downturn, he went twice a month.
'It is affordable, and the spreads are splendid,' said the businessman.
'If you go a la carte, you can't eat as much for the same price. Prices at hawker centres are also going up, so the difference is no longer as great.'
Nevertheless, nutritionists such as Ms Ho Yi Fei of DaySpring Corporate Wellness caution buffet stalwarts against overdoing it.
'When people pay a flat amount for a buffet, they want to eat their money's worth. This can lead to overeating and a less balanced diet because they usually eat less vegetables,' she said.
'These spreads normally offer foods that are high in carbohydrates and protein. Eating too much of such foods can lead to a host of problems including diabetes and heart disease.'

When Dennis Toh meets Joanne Peh

The highlight for me last week was a meet up with A lister local Celebrity Joanne Peh to discuss a possible school project collaboration. She strikes as someone who is very real, engaging and obviously gorgeous up close and personal.

She was also a very efficient person. Few hours after the meet up, she called and said 'It's on'!

I was pleasantly surprised by her lack of airs and attitude.

I am glad she agreed to work with me for a subject which i am working on in the next semester. So marketing students from TP, You will be working on this brand - Joanne Peh. And it will be a great challenge.

Joanne, I am sure you will have lots of fun working with the students.

and Thanks Winnie Tay for the link up. It was really great meeting you after so many years!

Well, all the best Joanne. I am sure you will fare very well in the coming Star awards 2011.

And Peeps, do your part to vote for Joanne Peh in the Star Awards 2011. She deserves all the recognition.

A tourist guide to Singapore, Singlish included.

SINGAPORE - A new guide book promises a tongue-in-cheek look at life in Singapore and it may be just the book for visitors to the island.

In On a Street in Singapore, a visitor would be pleasantly surprised to discover the multi-faceted aspects of life in this "little red dot".
Author James Suresh said the book was written with a humorous slant.
"There are six chapters, and we start off with a history of Singapore, why Singapore is called a 'Lion City'. Then we go on to places - places to go, things to see."
The guide, which comes with illustrations by local artist Syed Ismail, also explains the use of "Singlish".
For example, while a satisfied reader might exclaim: "This is an excellent piece of work!", some Singaporeans may well express their delight by saying: "This book 'shiok' man!"

The chief executive of the Singapore Tourism Board, Ms Aw Kah Peng, noted that Singaporeans, despite their international mindset, relate to one another in a very special way through the use of Singlish.

Singaporeans, she said, all know and understand "lah", "shiok", and "wah lau". "These words require no explanation. And that's what makes us different," said Ms Aw.

Costing $15, the book will go on sale today at major bookstores and souvenir shops. DYLAN LOH
